MSC Seascape Breaks Free From Moorings On Private Island

On Saturday, 31 May 2025, the MSC Seascape reportedly experienced a mooring incident at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas, where strong wind gusts caused the vessel to momentarily break free from its berth. No injuries were reported.

According to accounts from passengers on board, the ship was docked at Ocean Cay when sudden wind gusts, estimated at over 40 knots, exerted significant pressure on the mooring lines, leading to their failure. The vessel drifted slightly away from the pier before tugboats promptly assisted in repositioning and securing it back to the berth.

The incident underscores the challenges faced during mooring operations, especially under adverse weather conditions. Maritime safety experts emphasize the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of mooring equipment, as well as thorough risk assessments considering environmental factors such as wind strength and direction.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, transformed from an industrial sand excavation site into a thriving marine reserve, has been a unique private island destination since its opening in 2019.

The MSC Seascape is currently on a seven-day Caribbean itinerary. Following the incident, the ship departed Ocean Cay as scheduled, with no anticipated changes to its voyage plan.
